The most powerful man in Ashkar loves his daughter without limit, and builds her, one reasonable precaution at a time, the cage she will spend the rest of her life trying to leave.
Zarina is the Supreme Ruler’s only child, raised by a father who lost her mother and by an old Arcanum scholar who answers her questions honestly. Everything done to her is done out of love: the doubled guard, the chosen tutors, the year planned out before anybody thinks to ask her. She is very good at the life and grateful for it. Somewhere in her twentieth year she works out that nobody has ever forbidden her anything, and that she has never once chosen anything either.
