Eryndra walked eight hundred miles to the capital because she understood, before anyone else in the Sanctuary did, that the Gilded Coven wanted the Sylvan to fight back.
Asked her position by Lord Marcellin Auric on the day she walked unchallenged into his camp, she answered with her name. Asked again, she answered with her name again. The Sanctuary had never held offices that translated, and she did not intend to invent one for his comfort.
At first glance she appeared elven. At second glance, less so. Fine patterns like young bark ran along her neck and temples, and slender branches curved backward from her head, bearing tiny leaves out of season. Seven black birds followed her from rooftop to rooftop. One of them carried Vaelor Thane’s voice across half the realm to tell her that Oruun Hollow was gone.
Her whole negotiating position was two words. Remove this. She put two fingers on the road drawn across the map and said it, and when Marcellin said no, she told him that he was not drawing a road at all. He was choosing where to cut.
What she understood, and what cost her the loyalty of half the Thornwake, was the shape of the trap. If the Sanctuary buried the camps in the first weeks, Marcellin would carry the bodies east and the next people through the trees would be carrying Justicar banners. So she forbade massacres and permitted everything short of them: broken machines, taken crews, closed roads, workers returned barefoot and unharmed with one message. Leave the Sanctuary.
She held that line through Althuun, through Lethari, through Ilyr’s Rest, and through the open contempt of a warden who had known her all his life. She was still holding it when she admitted to the assembled Thornwake that she had been wrong — not about the trap, but about the time. She had believed restraint would buy the realm a chance to see what was happening. It had bought Marcellin a chance to build.
Before the Supreme Ruler she laid out bark-thin leaves bearing names no one in the chamber had heard, and made a court that knew how to count timber listen to a fragment of Thalenor Root remembering a child.
“You took our restraint and used it as time.”
